Nursing Interventions During Disasters
Haiti experienced a catastrophic earthquake in January 12, 2010. This led to the destruction of property, death of lives, and injuries (LEIDY, (2018). Nursing interventions have been established to save lives for those who survived.
Nursing intervention, has been reflected in this disaster through the following levels. Primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. The primary prevention involves disaster prevention, mitigation and preparedness of a risk to prevent it from occurring (Keim, (2018). This can be achieved through providing healthcare education to residents. Example, a training on first aid would assist in saving lives. This fall under the mitigation phase since it deals with measures to prevent the occurrence of disasters
The secondary prevention involves minimizing the effect of the injuries that have already occurred. It serves to restore people to their normal functioning of the body (Botha, (2006, February). For the injured patients, wound care is required, changing the dressed wounds when required, and preparing the patient for surgeries. This level lies under response phase since the disaster has occurred hence a step is required to restore the patient to the original condition.
The tertiary prevention intention is to minimize the prolonged effects that may follow after treatment (Botha, 2006, February). This can be done through, hosting the discharged for follow up care. This will facilitate their recovery state as the nurses will ensure the patient complete the dosage and attend clinics as asked to. The phase in association is the recovery phase. This is because it seeks to get the patient to the normal state.
In conclusion, catastrophes are unexpected occurrences in a community set up. Prevention measures are significant to reduce the severity of the occurrence. The right agencies should be embraced to provide the required assistance.
